Nuclear deal could create 15,000 jobs in Britain

Nuclear EnergyWestinghouse is planning a nuclear renaissance that will use Britain as a springboard to supply reactors to the whole of Europe, creating more than 15,000 jobs here.

Stephen Tritch, president and chief executive of the US-based reactor maker, which is owned by Toshiba, told The Times that the UK was one of four major markets on which Westinghouse was concentrating because of the Government's stated intention to develop a fleet of new-generation nuclear power stations.

Fast lead time from CNES saves Lafarge Cement UK 50 per cent of plant production

Close Up Track RingCorus Northern Engineering Services (CNES) has provided excellent service at exceptional speed by manufacturing a track ring for a coal grinding mill for Lafarge Cement UK in a mere four weeks, making a pattern and sourcing a casting through to machining and delivery, all through the Christmas period.

Whilst conducting an internal maintenance inspection, Lafarge Cement UK found a crack in one of its track rings for the Crusher tables. The tables hold the coal crushers in place, and act as a vital part in the cement making process. Therefore, a short lead-time was needed to ensure no lost production was incurred, despite it being the Christmas period.

After consulting with various companies, the shortest lead-time available for this large machining job was six months. This is where Corus came in, offering the customer the short lead-time it needed. Aidan Wynne, Maintenance Manager at Lafarge explains:

Talks Of Possible Bid For British Energy

British EnergyBritish Energy Group (BGY.L: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Monday it was in talks which could lead to a tie-up or an offer for the 6.7 billion pound company, boosting its shares.British Energy has been talking to several international power firms in recent months about partnerships to build new reactors after the UK government gave the go-ahead to a nuclear renaissance.

It was from these talks that the possibility of a closer tie-up developed, a source close to the situation said.Shares in British Energy, which generates about a sixth of the country's electricity, shot up nearly 19 percent to an 18-month high of 680 pence and was up 11.9 percent at 639-1/2p by 9:39 a.m., valuing the group at around 6.7 billion pounds.

"The board announces that the company is in discussions with interested parties in the context of its future and its plans to take a pivotal role in any new nuclear programme," British Energy, which is 35-percent owned by the UK government, said in a statement.British Energy, which runs eight of the country's ten reactors, nearly collapsed in 2002 due to weak power prices, but was bailed out by government and its shares were relisted on the stock exchange in 2005.

British steel firm reveals expansion plans

Steel PlantA 200-year-old Sheffield metal- basher is considering building a 15,000-tonne press - one of the world's biggest - to satisfy the demand for parts arising from the global renaissance in nuclear power.

Sheffield Forgemasters (SFI), which was on the verge of bankruptcy two years ago before it was rescued by a management buyout, has placed an order for one 4,000- tonne press and is weeks away from ordering a 15,000-tonne device as governments worldwide look to nuclear power as a source of non-carbon-emitting energy.

Audit reveals failure in maintenance management

PetroleumAudits of several players in the petroleum industry have revealed extensive failure in maintenance management. The Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) takes a serious view of the non-conformities and expects a clear improvement in the industry.

The non-conformities were reviewed and discussed with representatives from the players during a meeting with the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway in 2007.

The non-conformities, particularly the deficient criticality classification of systems and equipment on the facilities, entail that the industry does not have a good enough overview of what must be maintained. Similarly, there is not a good enough overview of how extensive and resource-intensive the need for maintenance is, and what risks the personnel carrying out maintenance work are exposed to.
