Energy savings, sustainability to propel AC drives market growth

PEM >>
Recovering from the deepest global downturn in recent history, ARC Advisory Group says it expects the low power AC drives market to resume steady growth through 2014. According to a new ARC Advisory Group study, this trend will be due to growing investments in the infrastructure and manufacturing industries worldwide, additional requirements to increase the energy supply to keep up with rising demand, and pressure from industry to deploy sustainability solutions that reduce costs by saving energy.

"Emerging economies, such as those in the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries and Eastern Europe, will again have increasing consumer demand from the growing middle class, more investments pouring into new infrastructures, and the need for producing and saving energy to cope with rising energy demands and costs in the future. This situation will bode well for low power AC drives market growth," says ARC senior analyst Himanshu Shah, the principal author of the study, Low Power AC Drives Worldwide Outlook.

Productivity and globalization accelerate growth
Manufacturers continually face challenges to raise productivity, lower product costs, reduce plant operating expenses, and increase return on investment in order to compete in the global market. Saving energy will be the key component for most organizations to be successful and profitable, since energy costs are expected to rise. Consequently, capital investments for low power AC drives are expected to grow across many industries because these solutions are designed to save energy and raise productivity of machinery by providing better and more precise speed control.

Globalization is driving the use of advanced automation and energy-saving equipment worldwide. According to the study, this will directly result in an increased use of low power AC drives, which are widely employed across the process, discrete and infrastructure industries.

Ford's Oakville plant first to implement assembly-line Wi-Fi

PEM >>
Ford is the first automaker to use Wi-Fi provisioning on the assembly line to wirelessly deliver SYNC software to vehicles equipped with the new MyFord Touch driver connect technology as they are being built.

The new on-the-assembly-line Wi-Fi capability eliminates the need for building, stocking and storing multiple SYNC hardware modules, thus reducing manufacturing complexity and saving cost.

“Using wireless software installation via Wi-Fi, we can stock just one type of SYNC module powering MyFord Touch and loaded with a basic software package,” explained Sukhwinder Wadhwa, SYNC global platform manager. “We eliminate around 90 unique part numbers, each of which would have to be updated every time a change is made— this system really boosts quality control.”

Earlier in the year, Ford announced that the next-generation SYNC system that powers MyFord Touch would feature a built-in Wi-Fi receiver. Now, Ford is further capitalizing on the limitless possibilities of this in-car wireless connection, making communication between the vehicle and the assembly line a reality.

The Oakville, Ont., assembly line that produces the all-new 2011 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX will be the first to feature wireless access points for software installation. In turn, the Edge and MKX will become the first vehicles to get their infotainment software installed via Wi-Fi while moving down the line.

A global endeavor, Ford is also targeting Chicago Assembly Plant, which is building the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer, for Wi-Fi installation capabilities. Plant locations throughout the world that will support the 2012 Ford Focus launch will soon follow.

Through July, hundreds of pilot vehicles were successfully moving through the Wi-Fi access point at Oakville. “Employees at the Oakville assembly plant helped us tremendously in getting the Wi-Fi process to work, and work perfectly,” said Wadhwa.

'Right-time' operational intelligence boosts business performance

PEM >>
What separates business leaders from laggards is the ability to generate timely and relevant business insight to support operational decisions, rather than simply relying on “gut-feel,” according to a new Aberdeen Group study.

Companies with top-performing operational business intelligence (BI) are twice as likely to share operational data across functions, and more than three times as likely to use a dedicated operational business intelligence platform, as companies with poorer performance, according to an Aberdeen Group research report. The report, Operational Intelligence: Boosting Performance with 'Right-Time' Insight, announced today by Aberdeen Group, finds that top performers with operational business intelligence have a similar profile from the C-suite to the line of business, focusing on operational review across the entire organization.

The research report delivers hard-hitting facts based on responses from over 230 companies, and investigates the steps top performing companies have taken to use operational business intelligence to improve their business.

"The real value of operational intelligence is the ability to apply BI and analytical techniques to everyday decisions and create insight that is based on fact, rather than gut-feel," says Michael Lock, research analyst and author of the study. "Fast and clean information is a large piece of that puzzle, but several other factors contribute to an employee's ability to make better operational decisions. Successful operational BI delivers analytical insight to more areas of the business and shares information collaboratively across departments and lines of business."
