Why: If your work is in Maintenance or FM, it is really essential for your career progression that you should at least have an awareness of PAS 55 and the implications of managing an organisation’s assets.
What: PAS 55 is The SPECIFICATION FOR THE OPTIMIZED MANAGEMENT OF PHYSICAL ASSETS and submitted as a “work item” to ISO for eventual ISO status and is defined as the systematic and coordinated practices through which an organization optimally and sustainably manages its assets and asset systems, including their associated performance, risks and expenditures over their life cycles for the purposes of achieving its organizational strategic plan.
Rationale: Good management of physical assets is becoming more imperative in the world. Recent events like the Texas City refinery disaster and the water drought in Australia demonstrate the need for a risk based approach to the management of physical assets.
PAS 55, an international specification for the optimised management of physical infrastructure assets, has been developed by the Institute of Asset Management and the British Standards Institution to recognise companies that are effectively managing their assets. It has rapidly gained the attention of major companies who see asset management excellence as an essential element of their business strategy.
Early adopters of PAS 55 are asset-intensive businesses such as utilities and transport, where business performance to meet the requirements of shareholders, service-delivery and asset performance are closely linked. The PAS 55 measurement framework enables the benchmarking of an organisation against what is regarded as worldwide best practice asset management and provides the opportunity to make a real difference where it will add value.
However meeting the criteria for certification should be regarded as an early step along the road of continuous improvement and as a catalyst for the necessary attitude changes required. The number of companies wishing to prepare for PAS 55 is growing, and we can expect PAS 55 certification to become as much a requirement as ISO 9000.
