Timken bearings cameo in Hubble telescope IMAX movie

PEM >>
In May 2009, when the future of the Hubble space telescope was hinging on delicate repairs performed by NASA astronauts using ATK's Mini Power Tool, ATK turned to a trusted source for precision components required for the job. Now ATK and Timken play a supporting role, featured larger than life with astronauts performing the precarious spacewalk repair in the movie Hubble 3D, currently showing at IMAX theatres in 48 countries worldwide.

ATK's Mini Power Tool equipped with Timken custom thin-section precision ball bearings engineered especially for the application's unique requirements helped to enable the crucial repairs to return the Hubble Space Telescope to active duty. Wearing bulky spacesuit gloves, the astronauts operated the Mini Power Tool flawlessly to unfasten dozens of tiny screws and replace circuit boards on the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), all while orbiting the Earth at 17,500 mph. The instrument repairs were critical to the ongoing operation of the Hubble telescope, which has since revealed new images of faraway galaxies after resuming its journey.

Timken engineered the miniature bearings in close collaboration with ATK to achieve smooth operation in the challenging space environment. Extreme operating temperatures, the vacuum of space and failsafe mechanical requirements were among the design parameters ATK and Timken engineers had to consider in designing the tool. Both companies have pedigrees supplying space-certified hardware for numerous NASA missions.

"When a spaceflight solution is needed, Timken is a trusted name with decades of experience," said Wayne Denny, Timken's chief engineer for Health and Positioning Control. "Aerospace engineers know they can turn to us to develop custom solutions that meet demanding conditions and environments."

Timken acquisition of QM Bearings includes B.C., Ontario locations

PEM >>
The Timken Company has completed the acquisition of U.S.-based QM Bearings and Power Transmission Inc. That location, as well as manufacturing facilities in Prince George, B.C., and Wuxi, China, along with distribution facilities in Ontario, Texas, and Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, will become part of the Process Industries segment of Timken's Bearings and Power Transmission Group.

The acquisition is expected to be accretive to Timken's earnings in its first full year with the company. The addition of spherical roller-bearing steel-housed units and elastomeric and steel couplings expands Timken's capabilities beyond its existing, core lines for especially demanding applications such as sawmill and cement operations.

"We welcome QM associates to Timken's family of businesses and look forward to serving our customers with a broader offering of high-performance products for demanding power-transmission applications," said Michael Arnold, president of Timken’s Bearings and Power Transmission Group.

QM has approximately 100 employees in the United States, Canada and China, and posted sales of more than $14 million for the 12-month period through June 30, 2010.

Gates food-grade belting to save maintenance time, sanitation costs

PEM >>
The Power Transmission unit of Gates Corp. now offers Gates Mectrol food-grade belting to save maintenance time and sanitation expenses in wash down environments. Companies processing meat, poultry, cheese or any raw food benefit from the highly cleanable belts.

A drop-in replacement for one and two-inch plastic modular belting, Gates Mectrol PosiClean belting offers full synchronization and a smooth design that requires less water and labor during cleaning and sanitation. FlatClean belting is the non-fraying flat belt replacement option, while CenterClean belting offers self-tracking.

The belting can be pressure washed on the table in 50-percent less time and cut water usage by 45 percent. The food grade belts meet material requirements of the USDA and the FDA and have sealed Kevlar or aramid tension members that limit stretch. In addition, they offer fastening and installation flexibility with the options of a vulcanized weld, mechanical fasteners or the new PosiLace single-pin system, which allows for simple belt removal while limiting the chance of contamination.

According to the company, one poultry processing plant replaced plastic modular conveyor belts with PosiClean belting to save $148,000 per year in labor, water usage, water heating and wastewater disposal costs.

Crane product manufacturer fined $50,000 after worker injured

PEM >>
Whitby, Ont.'s Gantrex Canada Inc., a heavy-duty crane product manufacturer, was fined $50,000 on Sept. 7 for a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act that caused an injury to a young worker.

On Sept. 19, 2008, at the company's Ajax manufacturing plant, a young worker was cutting strips of rubber using a shear machine. The machine jammed. The worker reached into the unguarded back of the machine to clear the jam. The shear activated and it amputated parts of the worker's thumb and finger.

Gantrex pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that the shear machine was guarded to prevent the worker from accessing its blade.

The fine was imposed by Justice of the Peace Ronald Prestage. In addition to the fine, the court imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
