SGS recently organised two seminars regarding personnel certification in the field of non-destructive testing (NDT). Held in the City of Manila, Philippines, on 16 March 2010 and in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on 18 March 2010, the seminars were designed to introduce the different certification systems.

Now entering its fortieth year in business, materials characterisation specialist Malvern Instruments is celebrating winning its fifth Queen's Award, a significant achievement that reflects the drive and commitment of everyone in this high-tech company. Details of the award were announced on the occasion of Her Majesty The Queen's birthday on 21 April 2010. Malvern is to receive the 2010 Queen's Award for Enterprise in the category Innovation, in recognition of the company's continuous innovation and development of its award-winning Zetasizer Nano range of particle characterisation systems.

Instrumentation specialist Ashtead Technology has announced the addition of the advanced Olympus I-Speed 3 high-speed video (HSV) camera to its comprehensive fleet of remote visual inspection (RVI) equipment.

Trevor Hiscox, known to many in the NDT aerospace industry, has joined the South West School of NDT to support its expanding NDT Level 3 consultancy business. Trevor spent over thirty years at Airbus UK Filton, during which time he undertook several NDT roles, from NDT Manager (Manufacturing) to Level 3 NDT Engineer responsible for auditing and approving suppliers. He also represented Airbus on the Nadcap Task Group and the UK National NDT Board.

Midas-NDT engineers have installed an automated eddy current inspection system at a United Kingdom service inspection company. The system is capable of the simultaneous inspection of both the exterior surface and the interior bore of a 2000 mm metallic shaft.

Occupational UV light exposure in Great Britain is now subject to the new Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010, which brought into law the European Physical Agents (Artificial Optical Radiation 2006/25/EC) Directive. This incorporates statutory UV light exposure limit values (ELVs) which became law on 27 April 2010.

A useful new facility on the FLIR website enables users to evaluate infrared images online. So, even without dedicated camera software, visitors can upload an image for analysis. It's intuitive, easy-to-use and absolutely free.

On 18 January 2010, SGS was the first inspection company in Spain to obtain authorisation to conduct visual inspections of cylinders for compressed natural gas in road vehicles from the Departamento de Innovación, Universidades y Empresas de la Generalitat de Cataluña.
