A practical introduction to thermal imaging at Rainham Mark Grammar School in Kent started calmly enough with the presenter, FLIR Systems’ Kevin Saxton, asking students to put a hand imprint on their shoulder. The thermographic camera trained on the scene revealed thermal traces of where hands had been via a projected image on the science lab wall.

PTM Industries Inc. in Toronto and Lafert North America in Mississauga, Ont., have extended their existing partnership. PTM (Calgary) will now provide distribution and logistic services for Lafert in Western Canada.
A comprehensive range of Lafert's metric motors and associated products are now stocked for immediate delivery from PTM's Calgary distribution centre. PTM currently acts as the national representative for Lafert's SITI metric gearbox and Sacemi coolant pump lines.
"Lafert is the North American market leader in metric motors," said PTM president Robert Furneaux. "We are very proud to be working with them to improve their supply and service operations in Western Canada".

Dematic, supplier of logistics systems for the factory, warehouse and the distribution center, has introduced a new support capability for users of automated material handling systems called Alert Monitoring Service. It provides a constant view of a user’s material handling system.
It monitors trends to reveal issues before they become critical and potentially lead to unwanted downtime, and it provides notifications about the status of controls, computer hardware and equipment. Personnel at the user site are notified by e-mail or SMS text messages with an alert of impending issues and recommended actions.
Utilizing the service allows a proactive and pre-emptive approach to the ongoing operational support of an automated material handling system. It uses smart filters and trend monitoring to determine if an issue requires action as well as the appropriate response. With early notification, many operational and technical issues can be addressed before an impact to system performance occurs.
The Alert Monitoring software utility is the constant “eyes on the system.” Dematic manages the definition and configuration of metrics, alerts, and notifications so the appropriate personnel automatically receive electronic alerts when a configured and tracked condition occurs. Alert notifications will enable Dematic and the customer’s support personnel to resolve system issues, often before operators are aware of the condition, thus improving the operating performance of the facility.

The first CSWIP Welding Quality Control Co-ordinator course will take place at TWI in Abington, UK, on 23-27 August (4 days training and 1 day examination). The next course has been scheduled for 27 September – 1 October in Middlesbrough. It will be followed by a course in November (venue dependent on student location demand).

Maple Leaf Consumer Foods Inc., in Kitchener Ont., was fined $100,000 at the beginning of August for a violation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act after a worker was injured.
On Nov. 13, 2008, at the company's factory in Brampton, a worker was preparing equipment that puts sauce on meat products. As the worker was attaching a return hose to a pump, the worker's finger was caught in the pump and its tip was severed.
The pump had been running while the worker was doing this preparation work.
Maple Leaf pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that the worker adjusted the equipment only when motion that could endanger a worker was stopped.
The fine was imposed by Justice of the Peace Karen Jensen. In addition to the fine, the court imposed a 25-per-cent victim fine surcharge, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
