It was a clean sweep for PEME at MAINTEC 2013, as personnel from the engineering company won the top slots at the inaugural MAINTEC Maintenance Professional Awards.
PEME's Tom Cosgrove was awarded Maintenance Apprentice of the Year, and the company's managing director, Ashley Maile, was announced Maintenance Professional of the Year.
The new awards, which are run in conjunction with EMS magazine, have been created to recognise and reward those who through the maintenance process have delivered real commercial benefits to their organisation. These benefits could be in the form of improvements in performance, such as greater output or reduced downtime, or financial gains such as energy savings.
The judges, Dr Steve Lacey from Schaeffler UK ltd, Mike Brook from ERIKS and Paul Sacker from Crimson Industrial Vision, applauded Tom Cosgrove for his commitment and ability, despite his young age. Tom has been described by colleagues as an exceptional 22 year old mechanical technician experienced in a range of industrial manufacturing environments with a proven ability to deliver maintenance-related tasks.
The judges said "Tom is an excellent role model for any young person considering a career in engineering and specifically within the maintenance field."
Ashley Maile was voted Maintenance Professional of the Year because under his leadership, PEME has made a significant investment in a maintenance initiative which is delivering a greatly improved Plant Maintenance performance for clients. PEME provides maintenance services and engineering asset management to companies in a number of industries. It was Maile's emphasis on working with clients and delivering a tailored solution for them which impressed the judges.
As he presented trophies to the winners, Jake Morrison, MAINTEC event manager said:
"It is wonderful to be able to applaud maintenance professionals as they are too often the unsung heroes of industry. The way an organisation manages its maintenance process can mean the difference between commercial success and failure. So it is right to recognise and encourage both the young talent entering the profession plus those leaders who are encouraging their organisations to achieve extraordinary things."
The MAINTEC Maintenance Professional Awards are an annual event, with the winners announced at the show. MAINTEC 2014 will take place at the NEC in Birmingham on 11 -13 March 2014
The A' Award and Competitions board are happy to inform that the Prisma project by L A Design & Sonatest Ltd wins the noted Platinum A' Design Award at Scientific Instruments, Medical Devices and Research Equipment Design Competition.
The A' Award and Competitions board are happy to announce that the project "Prisma" by Pete Holdcroft - LA Design, Matthew Brown - LA Design, Stewart Lamont - Sonatest Ltd and YvanGosselin - Sonatest AP has been awarded the Platinum A' Design Award in the Scientific Instruments, Medical Devices and Research Equipment Design category of competition. This project was selected as a winner by the international awarding commission of the A' Design Awards & Competitions Board's members.
Product Designers LA Design, who have partnered Sonatest Ltd in product design projects previously, outlined to the panel that the “Prisma is designed for non-invasive material testing in the most extreme environments. It is the first detector to incorporate advanced real-time imaging and 3D scanning, making flaw interpretation much easier, reducing technician time on site. With a virtually indestructible enclosure and unique multiple inspection modes, Prisma can cover all testing applications, from oil pipelines tohigh end aerospace components. It is the first detector with integral data recording, and automatic PDF report generation. Wireless and Ethernet connectivity allow the unit to be easily upgraded or diagnosed. ” Learn more about the award winning design and submission via the Prisma page on the A Award Website .
Platinum A' Design Award
The Platinum A' Design Award is a prestigious award given to top 1% percentile designs that has delivered an exemplary level of quality in design. The designs are judged by a panel of three different juries which are composed of Academic, Professional and Focus Group Members. The designs are evaluated using score normalization to remove any biases. Votes are cast on aspects such as functionality, ergonomics, engineering, presentation, innovation, usability, fun details, technology. Other specific points tare also considered, each of these points are further weighted via different jury groups.
The A'Design Award and Competitions aim to highlight the facets and features of best design, design concepts and design oriented products. The A' Design Award and Competitions are organized and awarded annually and internationally in multiple categories to reach a wide, design-oriented audience.

Monitran's new hand-held meter, the MTN/VM220, is ideal for detecting the early signs of component wear or failure in pumps, motors, gearboxes and other mechanical assemblies.
Southern Manufacturing & Electronics, Farnborough, United Kingdom – Monitran, a leader in the development and manufacture of transducers for the measurement of vibration, proximity and displacement, has launched the MTN/VM220; a compact, handheld meter for measuring vibration and temperature levels.
The MTN/VM220 conforms to ISO10816-3 and is ideal for detecting the early signs of component wear or failure in machinery, motors, gearboxes, pumps and other mechanical assemblies. The meter includes a crisp, colour LCD display and has the ability to store up to 100 readings (temperature and acceleration, velocity or displacement) against a real-time clock.
Measuring just 122 x 78 x 28mm, the MTN/VM220 has an easy-to-grip, tough rubberised case and a long-life rechargeable battery. It is supplied with a probe into which is integrated a dual-output, general purpose sensor, the MTN/2200T, which has default sensitivities of 100mV/g and 10mV/oC. Also included are a magnetic base and spike (for use with the probe), a coiled cable (0.5m nominal to 2m extended) with a 4-pin Lumberg connector at each end, and a universal (battery) charger; all in a foam-lined and durable carry case.
Andy Anthony, Monitran's Managing Director, comments: "We're extremely pleased with the look, feel and performance of our new vibration meter. Also, having hinted late last year that the meter was to be launched at Southern Manufacturing & Electronics, we've already received enquiries and advance orders from customers in the UK and abroad."
The MTN/VM220 is available immediately.
