In its facility in Sunderland, Unipres produces around 560 tonnes of steel press-formed automotive components for global manufacturers, such as Nissan and Honda. In order to keep pace with production demands, the company needed to upgrade its factory automation.

Combatting corrosion at the design phase Is all bearing surface damage troublesome?

Up to 40 per cent of a vegetable crop can go to waste due to the aesthetic requirements of some supermarkets. While a wonky vegetable may not be the most visually pleasing, it possesses the same nutritional value as its perfectly proportioned counterpart. Here, Chris Johnson, managing director of bearing specialist SMB Bearings, explains why not all bearing surface damage should cause alarm and future headaches for offshore oil and gas plant managers.

Bearing surface damage can take many forms, from spalls in the raceways, wear from ineffective lubrication, corrosion due to harsh chemicals to false brinelling marks caused by static vibration. While surface distress can result in problematic symptoms such as excessive heat, increased noise levels, increased vibration or excessive shaft movement, not all external bearing flaws point to compromised internal machine performance.

Dazzled by floodlight glare in a pitch black tank? Wolf Safety finds the ideal solution

A totally enclosed tank in a hazardous area which needs inspecting, cleaning or repairing is never going to win a workplace of the month award. You need good portable lighting just to see where you’re going, let alone carry out the task.

If you’re working in a team there will be floodlights in use in different locations within the tank and the last thing you want is to be dazzled by the glare of your own light or those of your colleagues.

Optimizing Steam Boiler Installations

In this article, following its recent launch of the SCOPE sequencing controller, Carl Knight – managing director of process steam and heat transfer specialist Fulton – takes a look at boiler sequencing control systems and how these intelligent controllers can optimise steam boiler installations to ensure energy efficient operation and improve boiler longevity.

Numerous processing facilities operate multiple steam boilers to meet the demands of their on-site processing equipment. Some sites operate a number of boilers to provide redundancy or reliability, others because space considerations mean multiple boilers are the preferred solution to a single, much larger boiler. However, if the steam boilers in facilities with multiple units are not optimised for efficiency, then the potential for any energy savings is not being utilised to its fullest.
