BCAS launches first 50 Hz compressor verification programme in Europe

The British Compressed Society (BCAS) has developed the UK’s first, independent performance verification programme for 50 Hz rotary compressors in the European market.

Buyers rely heavily on manufacturer datasheets to make informed purchasing decisions, but comparing performance data from different brands can be a complex task.  Working with its manufacturer members, the programme, which is supported with a new website, produces datasheets which provide a uniform and commercially practical means of comparing compressor performance claims during the specification and buying processes.
This ensures that all compressors under consideration are measured using the same standards, allowing buyers to compare true performance across brands, including differences in power rating, pressure and energy consumption.
Independent verification at BCAS’s third-party testing laboratory is the cornerstone of the programme and validates the information published by each manufacturer.  Verified data is, by its nature, trustworthy and can be of particular benefit when a company is implementing energy efficiency programmes and needs to report on its carbon reduction efforts with confidence.
Speeding up procurement
Compressed air systems involve multiple variables including kilowatt rating, flow rate, pressure, duty cycle and energy consumption to name a few. Standardised information helps buyers reduce technical complexity and reach a decision faster, without a protracted process of liaising with multiple vendors.
How the scheme works
Participating companies report compressor performance based on the internationally recognised ISO1217:2009 standard for compressors.
Datasheets for each of these machines is available on BCAS’s new website (https://performance.bcas.org.uk), helping buyers to compare models from different brands by kW size and by fixed or variable speed.
On a regular basis, BCAS selects, at random, machine samples to be sent to its laboratory in the UK. Here, each compressor is tested rigorously to verify that it meets the manufacturer’s published performance ratings.
Once a machine has passed, the participant may use the official verification programme badge on all qualifying machines.  If a test unit does not pass, the manufacturer has the option to have a second unit tested, which has also been previously chosen by BCAS.  If this unit also fails, the manufacturer must re-rate the unit based on the test results within 30 days.
Ashley Quarterman, Executive Director at BCAS said:
“Standardised, verified data helps buyers reduce technical complexity and reach a decision faster, without a protracted process of liaising with multiple vendors.
“In many industries, compressed air is a critical utility. If a system fails or underperforms, production can be impacted significantly. Buyers need to act fast to identify and specify a suitable replacement or upgrade to avoid costly downtime.  Having the ability to compare different machines quickly and easily, whether assessing different brands or even different models from the same manufacturer, can really pay dividends.”

How Mobile Access Is Transforming Multi-Site Maintenance Teams

Managing maintenance across multiple sites is complex. Inconsistent processes, communication gaps, reporting delays, and stock tracking issues all make it difficult to maintain efficiency — especially when teams rely on paper job sheets or desktop systems that weren’t designed for today’s mobile, reactive environments.

Mobile access to a CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System) changes that. With tools like ShireSystem MobileProX, maintenance teams can work smarter, faster, and more consistently — wherever they are.

Putting CMMS in the Hands of Engineers

Maintenance engineers often work on the shop floor, in tunnels, or at remote sites far from the office. They need full CMMS functionality at their fingertips, not just limited access. With mobile tools, engineers can view, update, and close work orders directly from a smartphone or tablet, complete with all the asset data, manuals, and instructions they need.

ShireSystem MobileProX includes features such as signature capture, fault cause logging, and inventory control. Its glove-friendly interface makes it quick and easy to use in the field or at height. This reduces delays, eliminates duplication, and ensures data is captured accurately and in real time. Engineers can respond faster, complete jobs more efficiently, and keep information up to date without returning to base.

Consistency Across Every Location

In multi-site operations, inconsistency is often the biggest barrier to efficiency. Different sites may use different naming conventions or logging processes, leading to confusion and unreliable reporting.

A mobile CMMS helps standardise maintenance processes across the organisation. With ShireSystem MobileProX, job types, fault codes, work order fields, and documentation are uniform everywhere. Teams follow the same procedures and “speak the same language”, making reporting, analysis, and auditing much easier.

Site managers and maintenance leads gain real-time visibility of progress across all locations, enabling them to allocate work more flexibly and identify priorities quickly.

Empowering a More Flexible, Responsive Team

Mobile access supports the way modern maintenance teams work — across shifts, call-outs, and dispersed facilities. MobileProX even works offline, allowing engineers to log data, complete jobs, and take photos without a network connection, syncing automatically when back online.

It also enables smarter use of mobile devices for:

  • Scanning barcodes or QR codes to identify assets and parts
  • Checking inventory levels in real time
  • Completing digital health and safety sign-offs
  • Creating or relocating assets while in the field

This field-first design improves accuracy, speeds up completion times, and reduces the need for return visits.

One Connected System, Many Gains

The benefits of mobile access extend far beyond convenience. For maintenance managers, it means fewer surprises, less reactive firefighting, and better insights for planning and budgeting. For engineers, it removes paperwork, wasted travel, and delays.

For the organisation as a whole, it delivers:

  • Reduced downtime through faster fault resolution
  • More efficient use of labour and resources
  • Better stock control and less waste
  • Stronger compliance and audit readiness

In short, ShireSystem MobileProX connects teams, standardises processes, and streamlines maintenance operations, wherever your engineers are working.

If you’d like to see how mobile maintenance could transform your business, we’d be happy to show you.

Staying Compliant: Why Regulatory Maintenance Matters and How CMMS Helps

Compliance in maintenance and asset management is one of the most critical, yet often underestimated, responsibilities. For life science and industrial maintenance professionals, it’s not only about keeping equipment running but ensuring every task aligns with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

This article explores why regulatory compliance matters, the challenges it poses, and how a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) can make staying compliant far easier.

Why Compliance Must Be a Maintenance Priority

Compliance isn’t just about avoiding fines, it’s about safeguarding people, assets, and reputation. Non-compliance can lead to legal action, financial penalties, and even serious safety incidents.

Embedding regulatory maintenance into your asset management plan helps build a culture of accountability and operational excellence. It leads to safer, more reliable operations, improved uptime, and greater confidence across the team.

Understanding Regulatory Maintenance

Regulatory maintenance covers the planned inspections, servicing, and documentation needed to meet industry-specific legal and safety standards. These may come from health and safety bodies, environmental agencies, or sector regulators.

In industries like food production, energy, or healthcare, missing a single inspection can cause both safety risks and compliance breaches. By integrating these requirements into routine maintenance, organisations can reduce risk, improve reliability, and protect employee wellbeing.

How CMMS Supports Compliance

Manual systems and spreadsheets make tracking compliance obligations difficult and error-prone. A modern CMMS such as PEMAC ASSETS simplifies this by automating maintenance schedules, sending alerts for regulatory tasks, and storing all records digitally for instant access.

With a CMMS, maintenance teams gain visibility over upcoming inspections and audits via real-time dashboards. PEMAC ASSETS also provides digital audit trails, ensuring compliance data is transparent and traceable. Predictive maintenance features can even help identify and fix issues before they become compliance failures.

Avoiding Common Compliance Pitfalls

Keeping up with changing regulations is one of the toughest challenges for maintenance leaders. Requirements often differ by country, industry, or asset type, and using disjointed records can leave organisations vulnerable during audits.

A CMMS centralises all maintenance and compliance data, ensuring audit readiness and accuracy. It also supports training and certification tracking, helping teams stay informed about new safety standards or legislative updates.

Best Practice Tips for Regulatory Maintenance

  1. Create a Compliance Calendar – Document all regulatory obligations and integrate them into your maintenance plan.
  2. Use Your CMMS Fully – Make the most of alerts, automated scheduling, and digital audit logs.
  3. Review Regularly – Conduct internal audits to identify gaps before external inspections.
  4. Train Continuously – Keep staff updated on compliance procedures and empower them to report issues.
  5. Seek Expert Input – Consult compliance specialists or legal advisors where needed.
  6. Stay Adaptable – Regulations evolve; review and update processes regularly.

Final Thoughts

Staying compliant is about more than meeting regulations, it’s about creating a safe, efficient, and high-performing operation. With the right CMMS, such as PEMAC ASSETS, maintenance teams can automate compliance processes, reduce risk, and strengthen reliability.

A proactive, digital approach fosters a culture of safety and professionalism, ensuring your organisation is always ready for inspection and prepared for the future.

Great North Run for New Landia Chopper Pumps

For sludge tank mixing applications in the North of England, a total of three Landia Chopper Pumps have now replaced units that were causing irritating operational and financial issues for a water company.

Frustrated not only by a broken seal, but the prohibitive cost and time delay to replace it, the water company first switched one sludge tank’s pumping and mixing duties to a Landia Chopper Pump, with immediate positive results.

A further two of the failing costly pumps have both also now been replaced by the Landia Chopper Pump, which is in its 75th year.

In addition to the broken seals, exorbitant parts’ costs and excessive waiting times, the existing pumps were causing the water company unanticipated labour because they also required constant adjustment, whereas the long-proven Landia Chopper Pump (the world’s first, back in 1950) does not.

“Furthermore,” reports Landia’s Howard Burton, “our pumps, being close-coupled, have far smaller footprints.  This means they can slot into more confined spaces, and so can be used in applications where larger pumps simply won’t fit.”

He added: “The water company says that the level of pumping and mixing for the sludge tanks is still every bit as effective, if not better, and without all of the burdens caused by the troublesome and increasingly expensive previous units.”
