If the world is to end the threat from climate change, we need to produce more with less energy, says Mark Moody Stuart. In this week's Green Room, he outlines his vision that will help society fulfil this goal. Consumer opinion and choice is important, but it will not do the trick on its own
 
To address the climate challenge we need to reduce the carbon content of our energy by at least half. But at the same time we must learn to generate a unit of GDP for about half the energy which we use at present.

Energy efficiency and carbon content of energy are equally important, but they require different approaches to achieve them. I am a great believer in both the power of consumer choice and the market. As we come to understand the consequences, we do tend to make greener choices.

A 38-year-old man died after he became trapped in a machine at an engineering firm in Greater Manchester.

The man was trying to fix machinery at Fairey Engineering in Heaton Chapel on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters and ambulance crews were called out when the man became trapped at the plant on Crossley Road.

But he had suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead. A Health and Safety Executive investigation is under way.

Greater Manchester Police said there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

The gold market has been thriving in recent years.  An Australian company has announced plans to begin mining for gold near the Trossachs. Scotgold said it intended to fast-track plans to become the country's most significant gold producer after listing on the Australian Securities Exchange.

The company, which bought Cononish mine in Tyndrum in May last year, has raised millions of Australian dollars to begin operations.

Scotgold bought the mine, 90 km north of Glasgow, and other exploration licences from Fynegold Exploration. Their exploration rights cover 2,200 sq km of Central Scotland, making the firm eager to start operations on a number of gold prospects, including ready-to-drill targets along the Tyndrum Fault Zone in Glen Fyne.
