Klüber Lubrication expands its range of readily biodegradable oils for the maritime and offshore industry
These efforts affect the choice of lubricants used in ships, and machinery in general. The synthetic speciality lubricating oil is designed for the lubrication of propeller bushes and propeller shaft seals of fixed-pitch and controllable-pitch propellers. Klüberbio RM 2-100 is non-toxic to marine organisms - according to OECD 201, 202 and 203 tests - and its biodegradability is at least 60 per cent according to the OECD 301 F test.
A leading global manufacturer of propeller shaft seals subjected the new stern tube oil to a dynamic endurance test on a test rig fitted with the original seals, and it passed successfully. Klüberbio RM 2-100 is an environmental-friendly, reliable alternative to conventional mineral oils.
Just as the first oil of this series, Klüberbio RM 2-150, the new oil with viscosity 100 facilitates smooth start-up of propellers, even at very low temperatures. Whereas Klüberbio RM 2-150 is designed for application in moderate and warmer regions of the world, the new Klüberbio RM 2-100 copes exceptionally with the colder regions. Both Klüberbio RM 2 oils have a long service life owing to their good stability against oxidation, hydrolysis and temperatures. Klüberbio RM 2 oils are miscible with mineral oil-based stern tube oils for easy changeover.
In the development of both Klüberbio RM 2 oils, Klüber Lubrication cooperated closely with its affiliated companies SIMRIT and Merkel Freudenberg Fluidtechnik, both leading suppliers of shaft seals and profiled seals to the maritime industry. Like Klüber Lubrication, these two companies belong to the Freudenberg Group.
