CEMEX is a global building materials company with over 500 locations in the UK supplying ready-mix concrete, mortars, screeds, aggregates and asphalt to the construction industry.
When CEMEX was looking to invest in new technology and a fully serviced compressed air installation for an important new facility in Tilbury; it was an HPC project team that was successful in achieving one of the company's most significant contracts.
HPC was awarded a 10-year SIGMA Air Utilities contract by CEMEX for its Tilbury site which commenced in August 2009. The nature of this contract is that the customer pays a fixed amount each month and is provided with all the equipment and compressed air services required to operate the facility.
The HPC system has built-in redundancy which means that there are two compressors: one running and one as 100% standby. HPC has also installed a SIGMA Air Manager (SAM) to facilitate the control and communication that the site demands. Connected to the telephone system the SAM automatically creates an e-mail and SMS if there are any complications. These messages are sent to HPC within one minute enabling an engineer to react without delay and as required to resolve any potential issues.
The primary product manufactured at the new Tilbury site is known as CEM3, a blend of traditional cement and slag. This combination offers improved workability in unhardened concrete and improves the long-term durability of concrete structures particularly those that are subjected to aggressive environments. CEM3 is therefore suitable for all types of concrete applications, including housing, hospitals, schools and roads.
The total value of the CEMEX Tilbury project to HPC over the ten year contract is estimated at £700k. Based on the success of the project at Tilbury, CEMEX has invited HPC to consider and quote for several other large potential projects for further sites in the UK
