How Operator Asset Care Workshops Can Enhance UK Industrial Output!

An Operator Asset Care programme is based on the principle that the people operating production equipment on a daily basis are the ones most capable of improving equipment reliability and performance.
OAC creates a culture where operators develop 'ownership' of their equipment and work with maintenance, engineering and management to ensure that equipment operates properly every day.

MCP's Operator Asset Care Programme (OAC)

MCP's Operator Asset Care programmes will ensure companies implement a successful Operator Asset Care programme and achieve substantial benefits.

OAC is not costly to implement but it is not easy and should not be perceived as a short term measure. OAC is not a difficult concept to understand and its practices and techniques are all quite straightforward and logical. However, it is the change in attitudes and values accompanying the change in working practices that can be more difficult to grasp and implement.
The most Common mistakes companies make while implementing OAC are:
 When it's a separate initiative set up by just one department
 Poor communication between operations and maintenance
 Lack of management buy-in
 Lack of planning, a key requirement of OAC is to define and scope the programme.
 Not introducing a pilot programme first
 Lack of Training

MCP's OAC programme, in two stages, will ensure you avoid the common mistakes and implement a sustainable and successful programme. Stage 1 comprises of Site Assessment, Customised training and a workshop to support the development of an Action Plan. Stage 2 deals with the implementation of the Action Plan and provides on-going support.

The Preliminary Work for Stage 1

Day 1 will see a consultant visiting the site and meeting with team members to assess the; current maintenance strategy, condition of plant, on-site culture and morale and finally competence and behaviour of participants.

The training on Day 2 will be customized, based around the findings from Day 1 and will aim to improve the knowledge and understanding of the principles and implementation of Operator Asset Care for the team.

Typical Course Content:
 What is Operator Asset Care?
 Similarities and differences between Total Productive Maintenance, Autonomous Maintenance and Operator Asset Care
 Benefits of implementing an Operator Asset Care programme
 Practical activities involved in Operator Asset Care
 Key implementation steps of Operator Asset Care
 Overcoming barriers to the implementation of Operator Asset Care
 Typical training required for process operators

During the training a number of interactive exercises will demonstrate the savings that can be achieved using OAC.

Day 3 consists of the planning workshop, involving members of the team from engineering, production and management and typically is made up as follows:
 Review of Day 2
 Defining OAC and mission statement
 Defining objectives and strategy
 Defining high level Action Plan
 Defining work streams and deliverables to prioritise plan
 Defining supportive structure including owner, steering group and project management

The outcomes from Day 3 will be incorporated into a high level action plan which will detail primary work streams, along with the work stream owners, programme structure and governance.

The implementation of the action plan will be carried forward in Stage 2. But the benefits from undertaking Stage 1 will be an increase in knowledge and understanding of OAC and a great opportunity for a cross-section of staff to discuss and engage with operator asset care and clearly see the business benefits that can be achieved.
