Mattei helps printing company save costs with energy efficient technology
Following a data logging exercise to prove potential cost savings, compressor manufacturer Mattei has provided a marketing solutions company with a quiet, reliable and efficient compressor to power the company's printing presses.

Based in Worcestershire, marketing solutions company 4DM has been successfully trading for more than 20 years, offering digital printing and mailing services. Mattei had been servicing the company's old compressors, but these had started to become unreliable. They were also leaking oil; a costly fault to repair and disruptive to operations. Mattei recommended conducting data logging to determine whether there was a more efficient and reliable solution to meet 4DM's compressed air requirements.

Martin Chitty from Mattei comments: "4DM were using two 15kW compressors to provide the compressed air needed for the printing machines. However, our data logging showed that replacing these with a single 30kW compressor would provide electrical savings of over £5,000 per annum; a significant saving on the company's bottom line."

4DM's annual printing capacity of 400 million feet enables the company to fulfil all levels of printing volumes including large quantity, fast turnaround transactional statement stock for financial services companies. Mattei supplied its AC30H fixed speed compressor to provide the pressured air used on the three colour printing presses.

In addition, Mattei also helped deliver further savings of around £800 a year through specifying a heat recovery system. Due to the low noise levels of the machine, Mattei was able to locate the new compressor within the printing facilities - previously the machines had been positioned in an outbuilding. Mattei used ducting so that the warm air expelled from the compressor could heat the production area in the cooler months and then be vented outside during the summer.

Len Bartlett from 4DM says: "Compressed air is essential for running the printers, so we needed a reliable source, otherwise we could easily get behind schedule on a job. We had been using Mattei's services to maintain our old compressors, so when the time came to invest in a new machine that would deliver reliable air, we were in no doubt that the company would deliver the optimum solution. As well as providing a new compressor, the company also assisted us in successfully applying for an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust, which has allowed us to make the upgrade more easily.

"The compressor has been in operation for nearly a year and we have definitely seen the savings shown by the data logging exercise. Taking into account the total project expenditure, which included mechanical and electrical costs to install the new machine, the payback on investment will be less than two years."

The AC30H rotary vane compressor is part of Mattei's 2000 AC Series, which offers outputs of between 30kW and 55kW with eight, 10 and 13 bar pressures. The compressors can be fitted with a fan directly mounted onto the main motor's shaft to cool the compressed air system as opposed to using an independent electrically driven fan. This differentiation is essential in the design of the machine, further enhancing its energy efficiency. Its neat and compact design means it occupies minimal space and provides excellent accessibility for quick and easy maintenance.
