Metering & Monitoring

Make energy management easier with Spirax Sarco

MetercomMetercom II software
Metercom II monitoring software launched by Spirax Sarco aims to help companies save energy by applying more effective Monitoring & Targeting (M&T) programmes. With industrial gas users typically facing fuel price hikes of over 130% between 2004 and 2006, effective M&T can cut energy bills by at least 10% through simple good housekeeping.

Metercom II is a PC-based software package that provides automatic meter reading and reporting facilities for all steam meters. It can also monitor other utility meters such as gas, oil, water, air and electricity. In fact, any meter that has a pulsed or 4-20mA output can be read.

The software can automatically generate reports on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. The reports can be structured to show consumption and the cost of consumption for the complete plant, per medium (such as steam or gas) and per meter. Statistical data, such as minimum, maximum and average flow, is also available for each meter. All data is securely stored to a Microsoft Access database, every two seconds, making it directly accessible by the user via third party software such as Crystal Reports or Microsoft Excel.

Daily reporting means that plant engineers no longer have to wait until a bill comes in to see if a poorly controlled process or an undetected leak is costing money. Any significant increase in consumption is easy to spot by comparing daily reports, while the information provided in graphical history reports gives a clear indication of any changes in base load consumption.

Meters are often installed with the intention of introducing a regular reading and recording programme, but time pressures and other constraints make it all too easy to neglect them. Metercom II allows an Engineer to view all meter data on a single PC without the need to tour the plant, making it a convenient way to collate the necessary information to run an effective monitoring scheme.

Metercom II also supports more accurate product costing by producing a report per production batch. By interfacing with production equipment, the software can generate a record of the energy used in each production run.

Metercom II’s trending capabilities enable engineers to review and analyse energy consumption throughout any period of measurement. This provides a useful way of detecting faults by showing abnormal loads on the energy supply. Two traces from different time periods can be positioned over each other for direct comparison.
