Thanks to the installation of a new 4VT Series boiler from CFB Boilers, the Levant Mine beam engine – the only one of its kind in the world to still work in its original location – is working again, and providing visitors to the National Trust site with an authentic flavour of Cornwall's mining history.
Old boiler breaks down during peak season
Dating back to 1840, the historic winding 'whim' engine was built by Harvey & Co of Hayle to power the mine's 530m-deep Skip Shaft – where two rectangular metal boxes were used to carry copper and tin ores to the surface. Having been a key attraction at the site since its restoration in 1992, the engine fell silent earlier this summer, when the 20-year-old boiler which supplied it with steam broke down.
McGills of Kensington operates a large laundry site and network of retail outlets throughout London. To fulfil demand and deliver on its strict service level agreements, the firm's production works operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
With fuel prices rising all the time and unlikely, in the foreseeable future, to come down the challenge for most plant engineers is to try and reduce boiler running costs. One option being considered more and more by companies is the long term hire of boilers, as Michael Rutter, Sales Engineer of Byworth Boiler Hire explains “ Long term hire has a number of advantages. Not only is the problem of capital outlay for new plant alleviated but hire also ensures the very latest, highly efficient boiler and equipment is made available. In addition long term hire gives companies the flexibility to react to any reduction or increase in heat requirements”.
