The world’s first lightweight portable davit jib crane capable of lifting a tonne in weight has created quite a splash with the water industry since its launch early this year.The innovative new system designed, developed and manufactured in-house by Chepstow based Reid Lifting, is specifically designed to meet and exceed the rigorous requirements and stringent health and safety regime of the water industry.
The lightweight Porta-Davit is made from aluminum, can be carried and assembled by one or two people, lifted into embedded sockets on site and ready for use within minutes. It can then be dismantled, cleaned and packed away ready for re-use.
It is designed for water and waste treatment plants where pumps, valves and filters need to be lifted for inspection on a regular basis.
Lifting equipment manufacturer, Demag Cranes & Components Ltd, has installed a specialist crane system at Enviropower Ltd’s energy from waste plant in Lancing, West Sussex. The £12.5 million renewable energy facility processes biomass, typically timber and cardboard waste from the construction and demolition industries, for the generation of electricity. 
As lifting equipment and associated components age, efficiency and reliability are inevitably compromised, often resulting in higher operating costs and potential safety implications. Corus Process Engineering (CPE), part of Corus Northern Engineering Services (CNES) has successfully completed the manufacture and assembly of two, six-metre diameter steel lifting girdles that will be used to remove (lift and tail) the 400-tonne heat exchangers from the reactors at Calder Hall nuclear power plant in Cumbria.
