ECOM AC Portable Emissions Analyzer
The ECOM-AC emission analyser measures six gases and calculates all the common combustion parameters. It is a versatile and highly reliable tool for measuring the exhaust gases of virtually any fossil fuel fired combustion source. The AC can be used for maintenance and troubleshooting of commercial and industrial combustion systems, such as steam boilers, burners in process heaters, liquid and gaseous fuel fired reciprocating engines and turbines, and performance testing of combustion and pollution control devices. Known for its quick response, the AC analyser incorporates a high flow pump, a radiant gas cooler and a self-draining moisture trap to properly cool the gas samples and deliver precise samples to the sensors. Other features include a large, back-lit LCD display, on-board impact printer and automatic fresh air purge.

Testo Flue Gas Analyzer Model 300M
The Testo 300M flue gas analyzer is designed for day-to-day boiler and burner efficiency tuning of residential furnaces. User-friendly features include a large LCD display that lets you read the data while making furnace adjustments, and a handy infrared printer produces hard copy results on site. You can save and print at the touch of a button. The datalogging memory of this small, handheld unit holds up to 20 complete measurements.

Testo 350 XL Portable Emission Analyzer
Now available on rental or hire from Ashtead Technology the Testo 350 XL. Self-monitoring is one of those things the Environment Agency has picked at for a long time but it's still a surprise to see a full-blown scheme to expand it in the air.

The Agency has chosen to roll out its new Operator Monitoring Assessment (DMA) system on monitoring air emissions from industrial processes regulated under Integrated Pollution Control (IPC) - one of its toughest regulatory tasks.

"We chose it first as the most difficult to do,"says the Agency's OMA manager, Paul Wiggins. "It has the greatest variety and complexity and itmakes sense to start with it."

Under OMA, the Agency will assess the self monitoring of air emissions that operators and their contractors carry out and, on the basis of this audit, decide what priority to give check monitoring of the site. Plainly this provides operators with an incentive to do the job properly; do it well and the lightest of regulatory touches will be placed upon them, do badly and the onerous hand of the regulator will lie heavy.

The scheme was finalised last November and trials and audits are now well underway. A review
of progress so far is in progress and the Agency hopes to have all 1800 IPC processes in England and Wales audited by the Spring of 2003.

Last fall, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a rule creating a mandatory national system for reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The agency requires regulated entities to begin monitoring GHG emissions January 1, 2010, and to submit their first annual emissions reports March 31, 2011. This is a key step toward federal regulation of GHG emissions (a step that may have major implications regarding "major sources" and permitting requirements for new sources). It’s also an opportunity for power producers to implement their inventory management plans....

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to propose an emissions standard for mercury and other hazardous air pollutants emitted by coal- and oil-fired electric generating units in March of 2011. The anticipated rule would require emission control to meet the various standards using maximum achievable control technology, as determined by the prescriptive requirements of the Clean Air Act. In response to the expected rule-making, utilities will be required to make technology decisions in order to ensure compliance. One cost-effective approach to compliance may be the use of “co-benefits” from air quality control systems (AQCSs) already in service that are designed to remove other pollutants....

Luminant used remnants of the ill-fated Twin Oaks and Forest Grove plants (which were mothballed more than 30 years ago) to build the new two-unit 1,600-MW Oak Grove Plant. Though outfitted with equipment from those old plants, Oak Grove also sports an array of modern air quality control equipment and is the nation’s first 100% lignite-fired plant to adopt selective catalytic reduction for NOx control and activated carbon sorbent injection technology to remove mercury. For melding two different steam generators into a single project, adopting a unique and efficient “push-pull” fuel delivery system, assembling a tightly integrated team that completed the project on time and within budget, and for completing what was started almost four decades ago, Oak Grove Power Plant is awarded POWER magazine’s 2010 Plant of the Year award....

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Cormetech have developed an advanced SCR catalyst technology with high mercury oxidation activity capable of achieving 95% oxidized mercury over a wide range of operating conditions....
