Hydraulic SystemsThese external gear pumps feature versatility, strength and long useful life.Their simple construction ensures limited purchase costs and servicing. Thanks to these basic concepts, together with ever-improving product design and features, research-based on many years of experience, accuracy in material selection, production process followed in great detail and tests on mass-produced parts, our gear pumps have reached top quality standards.

For this reason, our products can work under heavy operating conditions and transmit high hydraulic power. Furthermore, Marzocchi pumps feature good hydraulic, mechanical and volumetric efficiency, low noise level and, last but not least, compact dimensions.
Generally these gear pumps usually consist of a gear pair supported by two aluminum bushes, a body, a securing flange and a cover.
Shaft of the driving gear projecting beyond the flange mounts a twin-lip seal ring (the inner lip being a seal and the outer being a dust seal). An elastic securing ring secures the ring in place.

thrust monitoringOne of the challenges facing plant instrumentation engineers today is the effective and reliable monitoring of thrust bearing wear in critical pump applications.  Typically pumps of this type are in continuous use and operational downtime is normally only permitted during planned outages.  Predicting the wear and hence requirement to replace the thrust pads, is essential to fit in with this regime.

With rotational speeds between 3000 and 7000 RPM, protection against potential pump damage is also key, as excessive thrust wear can not only damage the bearing assembly but also the impeller, resulting in the plant potentially being out of action for 6 months or more.

ImageBy monitoring the vibrations from critical components inside a hydraulic pump, fan, blower or compressor, companies can improve their plant efficiencies, eliminate production downtime and increase the operating life and reliability of plant equipment, says Ian Taylor of Corus Northern Engineering Services (CNES).Although the cost of a component inside a hydraulic pump, such as a rolling element bearing, rotor or fastener, is often very small compared to the total cost of the pump, the cost of production downtime and any consequential losses as a result of a component failure, are often significant.

For a processing plant, the typical cost of production downtime can equate to hundreds of thousands of pounds per day. Lost production in a paper mill, for example, equates to around

Centrifugal pumpsTRY TO INSTALL CONSTANT MONITORING. With proper instrumentation you can tell:

If the fluid in the stuffing box is about to change state and fail the mechanical seal. It could vaporize. It could solidify. It could crystallize. It could become viscous. It could build a film on the sliding surfaces and between the lapped faces. The differential pressure between the suction and the discharge can tell you how far you are operating the pump from its best efficiency point (BEP).

The suction pressure can tell you if cavitation is about to begin.Comparing flow to amperage can tell you if you need an impeller adjustment.Comparing flow to amperage can tell you if the wear rings need replacing. A probe in the bearing case or an infra red light can tell you if the bearing temperature is too high. A drop in capacity with no change in amperage consumption could tell you the open impeller needs adjusting.

PCTUnexpected pump failure can be costly and time consuming. By installing an affordable Hedland direct-reading flow meter on the pump case drain, the user can monitor changes in efficiency by keeping tabs on any increase in case drain flow. The excess case drain flow shows the pump is beginning to fail. This allows you to schedule preventive maintenance and reduce unexpected down time.

Hedland's Variable Area meter has a low pressure drop, typically 1-5 PSIG with an accuracy of 2% of full scale. The meter can be installed in any position with no special piping or flow straighteners. Hedland also offers the EZ-VIEW Variable Area meter, a low cost Polysulfone version with a 5% full scale accuracy.

For a more sophisticated case drain monitoring system, Hedland offers the Flow-Alert Reed Switch and MR Flow Transmitter. The Reed Switch can automatically signal an alarm if case drain flow increases beyond a predetermined limit. It can be connected to a PLC or to other devices to automatically open closed electrical circuits, or activate warning lights and audible alarms. MR Flow Transmitters can be connected to any data acquisition, PLC or PC for advanced analysis. It features an on-board digital display and electronic output signal with analog outputs of 4-20mA, 0-5 VDC or 0-10 VDC for remote transmitter.

A concept for the sustained assessment of sliding surfaces based on Merkel Counter Surface Parameters (MCPs) takes into account the specific requirements involved in hard-soft contacts.

Seal counterfaces have usually been assessed on the basis of parameters for metal-to-metal contacts.

However, as a piston and rod seal in hydraulic systems always involves a hard-soft contact, the result obtained for counter-surface assessment in terms of abrasivity, long-term behaviour and oil deposits provides restricted information.

This is leading to greater friction and more rapid wear of the sealing elements in tribological systems.

With MCPs, surface profiles are registered according to the tried-and-tested contact-stylus process.

Dispensing ValveThe simple pneumatic dispensing machine is generally low cost and almost ubiquitous. They improve the application of materials like single part adhesives, coatings, sealants and inks, by enhancing a manual process to one which is more controlled and repeatable, while health and safety benefits include less mess, less exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and fewer RSI issues.

These systems work by filling an industrial syringe or barrel with the liquid material. Pulses of air then push the liquid out of the other end, usually through a dispensing needle or tip. The quantity dispensed can be varied by the size of the needle orifice (from as small as 0.15mm), the pressure applied and the time of the air pulse triggered by footswitch, finger switch or automation. They may be hand-held or mounted on positioning robots or rotary tables.

Less than 1% variance is often easily achievable, and 0.1% not uncommon. Digital timers further improve accuracy.
