Designing for ZigBee - Understand the standards before developing wireless products

In a rapidly advancing world that appears to rely more and more on technology, it is evident that wireless technology is becoming one of the most essential of them all. Wireless devices are now found everywhere, from mobile phones to the headsets used to connect them. They are also found in automotive remote keyfobs, antitheft devices, home alarm systems, and the growing number of wireless modems in homes that provide access to the ubiquitous internet. These are only a few of the products which many have come to take for granted in the 21st century.

With wireless capabilities being incorporated into an increasing number of different types of products, there has been a concurrent growth in the different types of wireless technologies available, each of which may be better suited for different applications.

ZigBee is one of those wireless technologies that have emerged to cater to specific needs. It is a low cost, low power, mesh networking technology that offers dramatically increased battery life and has been developed to support applications in a number of industries including:

  • Home Automation (HA).
  • ZigBee Smart Energy (SE).
  • Telecommunication Applications (TA).
  • Personal, Home, and Hospital Care (PHHC).
  • Commercial Building Automation (CBA).

Essentially, ZigBee is radio device operating in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) unlicensed bands (868 MHz, 915 MHz and 2.4 GHz) and is comprised of a radio section based upon the IEEE 802.15.4 specification, with the ZigBee part sitting on top. The mesh network functionality is a type of networking where each node in the network may act as an independent router and allows many different devices to communicate with each other by passing messages through adjacent devices, unlike traditional wireless networks that tend to operate on a one-toone tree structure.

To complement ZigBee, the RF4CE (Radio Frequency for Consumer Electronics)

Regulation of energy efficiency presents new certification challenges

There is a huge drive to improve energy efficiency from customers wishing to save on running costs, manufacturers trying to gain competitive advantage and also from governments.

The number of international energy efficiency standards is growing requiring manufacturers to not only think about efficiency during design, but also ensure that appropriate certifications are obtained.

Although regulation and encouragement of energy efficiency by governments dates back many years, with the American Energy Star initiative being probably the best known, new regulation is flooding onto the market.

EX-cellent CE marking

EX product certification for Europe is governed by the ATEX equipment directive 94/9/EC under the European Commission's new-approach (CE marking) regime and is one of several directives or requirements relevant to equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres. Manufacturers may also have to consider the design, documentation, manufacturing and quality system implications for EMC, machinery safety, electrical safety and radio/telecoms compliance before applying the CE mark.

2010 brings in new CE requirements, set out in Council Decision 768/2008. The Decision also sets out restriction, prohibition and recall provisions for persistent non-compliance in equipment safety or supporting documentation. The Decision is likely to be applied, within twelve months, to all current directives.

In addition to regulatory aspects, functional (e.g. radio/telecoms) and/or environmental performance criteria (e.g. vibration, shock, wind, rain) may apply. TRaC provides notified body, certification body and testing laboratory services for these complementary directives, from its seven UK sites.

Why are there so many emissions standards?

Keeping up to date with standards in any industry is a challenge but the EMC industry doesn't help itself with so many standards all covering essentially the same thing. There are at least six common emissions standards based on international CISPR standards covering household, industrial, information technology, lighting and broadcast receiver products. In addition to these basic standards there are industry specific standards which make reference to the basic ones, resulting in 30-40 possible standards that a manufacturer can choose from.

TRaC ready with equipment - test programme for LPPV

TRaC has announced that it has assembled a suite of services that is now ready to be accessed by any company developing electronic products for use in the Ministry of Defence’s Light Protected Patrol Vehicle (LPPV) programme.

TRaC is equipped to provide a range of testing services, notably in areas such as Safety and EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility). The company already works closely with Millbrook Proving Ground, where vehicles are tested in respect of their mobility against a Battlefield Mission (BFM), and has established procedures to schedule programmes of testing in both arenas.

The LPPV programme, which aims to provide the Services with a new vehicle that will offer greatly increased protection to small, highly mobile teams, was defined in 2008 and is now at the stage of evaluation of initial vehicle offerings from multiple manufacturers. When it enters service, LPPV can be expected to carry an ever-increasing electronic-equipment payload in categories including communications, surveillance and electronic counter-measures. Only comprehensive testing to a demanding specification can provide the assurance that systems will operate – and inter-operate – with total reliability when called on to do so. TRaC has demonstrated over many years that it can apply the testing rigour needed to provide those assurances.

As with all classes of armoured vehicle, the platform selected for the LPPV programme will present a uniquely challenging operating environment for the equipment it carries, in mechanical, thermal, electrical and radiated-interference terms. As with all such programmes, LPPV specifies with some precision the test regime that equipment intended for installation in the platform must undergo, embodied in the System Requirement Document or SRD. TRaC has a well-established process for carrying out such tests, having long experience of working in previous programmes, and the Company is fully accredited to all the requisite security

TRaC to facilitate second Femto Forum plugfest

Following the Femto Forum's announcement earlier this week to hold a second plugfest, TRaC has today confirmed it will once again be facilitating the interoperability testing event and ongoing interoperability program.

The agreement comes after TRaC facilitated the world's first femtocell plugfest event earlier this year, which received widespread vendor support and was attended by more than 20 companies. TRaC and the Femto Forum are now making plans for the second plugfest and looking to build on their already successful partnership.

To be held towards the end of 2010, this second plugfest will focus on the Broadband Forum's Femtocell management standard, building on the work of the Forum's first plugfest on the Iuh interface.

Karim Sharf, chief operating officer at TRaC, commented: "Femtocells and their deployment is undoubtedly becoming a significant focus for many telecommunications operators.

"By holding a second plugfest we can really drive forward the development of femtocell technology, providing valuable feedback to standards organizations and ensuring consistent interoperability between vendors' equipment.

"TRaC and the Femto Forum both see interoperability as integral to the successful uptake of femtocells. In order to address this need, the Forum created an interoperability testing special interest group (IOT SIG) and asked Karim Sharf, the vice chair of the SIG, to act as editor for the interoperability test specifications document, being used as the basis for the plugfest program.

"Open and effective standards are central to the success of femtocells. They provide operators and users with a real choice of devices while also driving economies of scale to bring down the cost of the technology," said Simon Saunders, Chairman of the Femto Forum. "TRaC was instrumental in the success of our first plugfest and we look forward to continuing our partnership in the

TRaC in the US gets MET approval

Mark Heaven, CEO of TRaC, has just returned from a seminar held by US safety mark partner MET Labs. The seminar not only covered US and EU mandatory EMC and Safety but also included presentations by DfR Solutions on Reliability Prediction for Electronic Hardware, Core Source Technologies presented Thermal Management Principles at the System Level and Verizon spoke of the company's progress at becoming greener.

Mark presented papers on the EU ATEX directive and it's synergy with the US Hazloc and the IECEX approvals programmes reviewing the routes to compliance and technical requirements whilst highlighting how time to market can be minimised by engaging with TRaC and MET early on in the programme and ensuring a qualification document and test plan is drawn up to suite all intended markets and avoid duplication. The cost reduction that ATEX factory inspection by MET fully supported by TRaC in the USA was particularly well received.

Mark was also able to announce the recent collaboration with BSI in offering an approvals programme for equipment designed to operate in explosive atmosphere, BSI is a well known and trusted brand in the US certification market. TRaC are now providing the ATEX test services for BSI's ATEX Notified Body.

A second paper was given on global wireless approvals highlighting the convergence of worldwide regimes in some areas and the divergence in others. The presentation focused on the way in which TRaC's wealth of regulatory knowledge and worldwide contacts can deal with what most would find a complicated approval process, delivering global market access for TRaC and MET clients.

TRaC gains full accreditation for IEC/EN60601 medical device testing

TRaC is now able to offer testing of medical equipment in accordance with the IEC/EN60601 standard. TRaC is fully accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) to test equipment in accordance with the international standard.

IEC/EN60601 is a family of standards that govern safety of electrical medical equipment, and is identical with the International IEC standard 60601; approval under the standard is a fundamental requirement before a manufacturer can market any electrical device for patient diagnostics, monitoring or care, in any market world-wide. The standard sets minimum requirements not only for basic electrical safety, but also for EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) and mechanical safety, as well as a range of other parameters, according to the particular technology employed in any particular item of medical equipment.

Developers of medical electrical systems now have a single point of contact for all their safety and EMC testing needs; TRaC is able to offer a cost-effective route to product certification, with good lead-times, in this specialised sector where the necessary expertise has often been difficult to locate.

TRaC already holds accreditation to carry out safety testing of all medical diagnostic products that fall within the scope of the European In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) Medical Devices Directive: In Vitro Devices are items of diagnostic equipment that carry out medical tests on samples obtained from the human body, but that do not have direct contact with the body. Now, with this latest development, TRaC is able to extend its test services offering to products designed to operate with direct patient contact.

Having accreditation under the very latest versions of the relevant standards equips TRaC not only to conduct tests of new equipment designs, but to update approvals on previously-tested products: TRaC can also

Dust ControlIn this article, Dustcontrol highlights problems associated with dust pollution in modern production facilities and illustrates how integrated high vacuum systems can provide competitive advantage. Intense workloads and pressure to produce quality products are
creating demand for cleaner production facilities. However, manufacturing intensity seems to make this need harder than ever.

Airborne dust and particulate waste from manufacturing processes are increasingly nacceptable in facilities trying to achieve efficient working environments. If physical concerns over product quality and environmental health are not enough, external pressures from COSHH and recent ATEX regulations, add to the burden.

While it may seem that air cleaning through large-scale ventilation is a primary option, many businesses could improve their facilities through on-tool extraction. This involves high vacuum systems that transport waste to a centralised location for easy disposal or intermediate pre-separators for potential recycling. Such systems can also be used as general in-house vacuums, negating the need for sweeping (which creates hazardous airborne dust) and mobile vacuums.

Can the CB scheme help your wireless product to market?

CB or not CB: that is the question. When you have worked in the telecoms and electronics approvals industry for many years, I think you tend to forget that to some people the compliance and approvals process can appear to be very complex. That's usually because it can be!

Take the manufacturer of a Bluetooth or ZigBee product. These radio modules are now incorporated into thousands of different product types, with a truly global market reach. So when it comes to compliance testing, the manufacturer usually knows that it needs to go through EMC and radio testing, but the safety aspect of the testing can often be overlooked; and when it comes to marketing the product in various countries around the world the proverbial brick wall can be encountered. This can be particularly frustrating as many different countries around the world have varying requirements for the safety testing of products which are to be allowed in their territory.

However, all is not lost!

Enter the "IECEE CB Scheme" for safety. The IECEE CB Scheme is an international system which applies to the safety of electrical and electronic products so that they can be readily accepted in international markets. It is essentially a Passport for safety compliance, and can be used in support of applications for National Marks such as UL or CSA. It provides an excellent conformity assessment platform for manufacturers wanting to trade in global markets and whose products need to demonstrate third party conformity to relevant standards. It consists of 54 member bodies whose aim is to promote mutual recognition of the testing process. It is also possible for some countries which are not part of the CB scheme to accept CB certified reports as a demonstration of compliance.

So how does it

TRaC extends vibration testing with low-frequency test rig

TRaC, the environmental and standards-compliance test house, has extended its capabilities in low-frequency mechanical vibration testing by commissioning a new low-frequency test rig at its Warwick laboratory. The new rig  is one of the few commercially available systems that can apply a wide range of vibration tests, such as the demanding European Naval specifications, to large and/or heavy products and systems.

The test system comprises a vibration platform measuring 1.3 x 1.3m, that can carry a test-piece load of up to 2 tonnes. The system is single-axis; that is, the platform's actuator moves it back-and-forth in one plane or direction, subjecting a unit-under-test (UUT) to vibration over a calibrated frequency range that extends as low as 0.1Hz, and up to 150Hz. UUTs can be subjected to a maximum acceleration of 5g at a frequency of 150Hz, and maximum displacement is 150 mm full-scale.

Movement of the table is under the control of a closed-loop system that employs electro-hydraulic actuators to generate the motion, and a combination of displacement transducers and capacitance-type accelerometers to give high-accuracy feedback in position and acceleration, respectively.  The level of precision of which the control system is capable means that it can apply either sinusoidal or random vibration, or pre-defined profiles of shock and vibration over specified intervals. These scenarios include the marine and sub-sea low-frequency environments that the original specification set out to meet.

Existing test facilities that generate low-frequency mechanical vibration use electromagnetic actuation ("electrodynamic" systems) which creates stray magnetic fields, meaning that UUTs sensitive to such fields cannot be tested. TRaC's electro-hydraulic system completely avoids this limitation, as well as going far beyond the lower frequency limit of electrodynamic systems.

Robust construction also means that TRaC's test platform can carry

And you thought your EMC tests were difficult!

All electronics engineers are familiar with EMC testing, generally viewing it as yet another challenge to be overcome by good design.

However,it's not just small electronic products that are affected: EMC is becoming an increasingly important element of large infrastructure projects.

In industries such as transportation infrastructure and power generation, the equipment can be physically large, the regulations stringent and the cost of failure pretty terrifying.

Achieving certification for countries that don't have a strong test infrastructure

Many countries have their own specific requirements for certification of products, but don't always have the infrastructure to test to these standards. This presents a problem - how can you get certified if no one in the country can test your product?

One example is Brazil, where telecommunication equipment is subject to Anatel (Agencia Nacional de Telecomunicacoes) certification in Brazil. These regulations state that telecommunication products should be tested by a suitable Brazilian third party test laboratory, but the services offered by these laboratories are limited.

TRaC Opens Largest Test Facility in North West of England

TRaC announces a major expansion of its operations in the North West of England. The company today opened a new 15,000 sq. ft. centre of excellence in Up Holland, Lancashire, making it the largest commercial facility in the North.

The test facility is the only one of its kind in the North West of England that places a comprehensive testing service within easy travelling range for customers in the region. TRaC is already the biggest British test and certification company and the new facility strengthens the company's presence in the North, complementing the existing Hull facility that is the largest in the North East.

TRaC has invested more than £1 million in the new Lancashire location which has been supported by the North West Regional Development Agency. The company is currently hiring for key positions and plans a second wave of recruitment later this year to support the anticipated growth of its existing business in the region.

TRaC provides a testing service that ensures and certifies that its clients' products comply with EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) regulations; wireless, radio and telecoms standards; and environmental and safety requirements. TRaC holds a comprehensive range of accreditations to issue product approvals to national and international standards: through a combination of its own facilities and worldwide partnerships, the company offers global reach.

In today's regulatory climate, few products achieve certification in a single visit to a test laboratory; in contrast, TRaC’s involvement with many of its clients' projects begins early in the design process. Support that begins with design analysis, and continues through pre-certification testing, ensures that projects stay on track at the final certification stage. Local, quick and easy

HALT / HASS Seminar - Tuesday 5th Oct 2010

To guide you in your product development, TRaC are hosting a Technology Insight Briefing that will both explain the concept, and provide a practical demonstration of HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Test) and HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screening).

Mr. Bob Page of Reliability Plus, an industry expert in this field, will lead the presentation being held at the TRaC Environmental & Analysis facility in Warwick on Tuesday 5th Oct 2010 from 9am to 4pm. This seminar will be particularly useful to Engineers who are managing new product development programmes.

HALT is rapidly emerging as a recognised means to dramatically cut development timescales through a process of accelerated aging. This is achieved by employing high levels of multi-axial vibration and rapid temperature cycling, either separately or in combination. Whilst the test does not mimic a particular reality, it very effectively employs environmental conditions commonly experienced in service, and so exposes design features and manufacturing defects which could lead to premature failure.

The registration fee (including lunch, refreshments, and set of seminar notes) is £110 (excl. VAT) per delegate. Attending delegates will also benefit from a 25% discount on HALT chamber hire for their company’s next HALT order at TRaC Warwick.

Places on the seminar are strictly limited to enable the interests of the individual delegates to be satisfied, so early registration is recommended. Shock announcement; TRaC extends environmental test services

New investment adds Drop-test Shock Machine to extensive product test facilities. TRaC has further extended its environmental test capabilities with the installation of a Lansmont 95 shock test machine.

The investment, at TRaC's Warwick facility, augments a shock, impact and vibration test installation that already comprises 14 electromagnetic "shakers" and an alternative design of drop test machine.

The Lansmont 95 is a vertical free-fall drop shock test unit, with a square table size of 950 x 950 mm and a payload capacity (mass of the unit to be tested) of 1000 kg.  It provides a carefully-controlled environment for drop-testing, in which shock pulses have a known profile and are fully repeatable.  The test machine will apply half sine, final peak sawtooth and trapezoidal waveforms, at acceleration levels of up to 800g. It allows shock testing with the device-under-test energised, and has the facility to acquire up to ten channels of data from the shock test.

TRaC's environmental test laboratory is fully UKAS accredited; the area in which the new machine has been installed is purpose-built, with all appropriate safety features, and can carry out testing on both commercial and defence equipment.
