MECHAN BRINGS INNOVATIVE ITALIAN PLANT TO UK

Leading Sheffield-based manufacturer, Mechan, has signed an exclusive deal to supply unique Italian mini cranes and mould handling equipment to the UK and Irish markets.

Thanks to its partnership with Gruniverpal Tranchero, Mechan is now the sole distributor of the Minidrel S and Transidrel series mould lifters and the Minidrel B, GB and GIA series mini cranes.

Both the mini cranes and mould lifters boast Gruniverpal’s patented kinematic system, which allows the equipment to achieve lifting capacities and reach heights that were previously impossible.

The Gruniverpal mini cranes are widely regarded as some of the best on the market. They feature a combined articulated-telescopic hoisting system for maximum flexibility, whilst their compact construction makes them suitable for access to confined areas. The slewing boom’s 180-degree rotation (left and right) and hydraulic controls ensures precision handling, even in restricted spaces.

UNIQUE PORTABLE WLL 1,000kg DAVIT CRANE SETS NEW STANDARDS

The world’s first lightweight portable davit jib crane capable of lifting a tonne in weight has created quite a splash with the water industry since its launch early this year.

The innovative new system designed, developed and manufactured in-house by Chepstow based Reid Lifting, is specifically designed to meet and exceed the rigorous requirements and stringent health and safety regime of the water industry.
The lightweight Porta-Davit is made from aluminum, can be carried and assembled by one or two people, lifted into embedded sockets on site and ready for use within minutes. It can then be dismantled, cleaned and packed away ready for re-use.
It is designed for water and waste treatment plants where pumps, valves and filters need to be lifted for inspection on a regular basis.

LIFTING ENERGY FROM WASTE

Lifting equipment manufacturer, Demag Cranes & Components Ltd, has installed a specialist crane system at Enviropower Ltd’s energy from waste plant in Lancing, West Sussex. The £12.5 million renewable energy facility processes biomass, typically timber and cardboard waste from the construction and demolition industries, for the generation of electricity.

To meet the specific materials handling operations at Enviropower’s plant, Demag installed a 10t SWL, 13.25m span, double girder grabbing crane. Mounted on the crane is a wire rope hoist with a 10 cu m bucket grab on a 12.4m hook path. The system has cross travel speeds of 3-30m/min, long travel speeds of 4-70m/min and hoisting speeds of 1-16m/min.

EXTENDING THE OPERATIONAL LIFE OF LIFTING EQUIPMENT

As lifting equipment and associated components age, efficiency and reliability are inevitably compromised, often resulting in higher operating costs and potential safety implications. To address these issues, Demag Cranes & Components Ltd recommends that its lifting equipment should be subject to a general overhaul at least every ten years of its operational life.

Demag general overhaul programmes have been designed to restore equipment to optimum performance and safety levels, providing a cost effective alternative to investment in new materials handling technologies. Such regimes, backed by ongoing certification, also help operators meet obligations under workplace health and safety legislation, including the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998. At a time when health and safety is high on the public agenda, in an increasingly litigious society, accidents or injuries arising from poorly maintained plant and equipment, may lead to the investigation and prosecution of employers under these statutes. In extreme cases, where a fatality occurs, prosecution and expensive compensation claims may be brought under the Corporate Manslaughter & Homicide Act 2007.

LIFTING EQUIPMENT MANAGERS, PUT AN END TO TEDIUS PAPERWORK WITH NEXUS.

PUT AN END TO TEDIUS LIFTING EQUIPMENT PAPERWORK WITH NEXUS.

NEXUS from Granada Cranes and Handling, is an easy to use online database for clients/customers lifting equipment. It contains/can hold all information relating to the equipment including:
•    Details of work carried out
•    Cost history
•    Records of reports and certificates (where applicable)
•    Maintenance sheets
•    Site time records
•    Risk assessments
•    Work permits

PUT AN END TO TEDIUS PAPERWORK
All ‘paperwork’ carried out by Granada engineers is done electronically using PDAs and sent to Granada and the customer automatically. This means no paper which is both good for the environment and for traceability. Documents are stored electronically and therefore cannot be lost. They are then posted automatically to a secure server where they can be viewed by internet connection in a simple format.
STAY UP-TO-DATE 24/7

CPE Manufactures Lifting Girdles for Largest Nuclear Lift in the UK

Corus Process EngineeringCorus Process Engineering (CPE), part of Corus Northern Engineering Services (CNES) has successfully completed the manufacture and assembly of two, six-metre diameter steel lifting girdles that will be used to remove (lift and tail) the 400-tonne heat exchangers from the reactors at Calder Hall nuclear power plant in Cumbria.

Each reactor has four vertically mounted heat exchangers. These are located externally to the reactor building and were clad for insulation and weather protection. The heat exchangers weigh around 400 tonnes and measure 27m in length with a diameter of 5.5m. This will represent the largest ever lift in the UK nuclear industry. CPE delivered the lifting girdles to its customer Nuvia Limited (formerly NUKEM Limited) at the end of February 2008. Nuvia is one of several contractors chosen by Sellafield Limited to decommission the Calder Hall site.

Periodical Inspection
A Statutory Scheduled Inspection determines whether usage of the crane has caused any changes that impinge on safety, and addresses in particular material fatigue, wear, corrosion and other damage. The Operational Reliability Inspection covers the safety of the user, the persons working within the operating zone of the lifting equipment, and service and repair personnel. The Operational Reliability Inspection also ensures operating reliability of the crane by defining the maintenance status of the equipment and checking the adequacy of preventive maintenance.
