Alps Electric (Ireland) Limited has reported significant efficiency improvements in its engineering maintenance processes since the installation of Mainsaver CMMS from Spidex Software. Alps, which supplies automotive electronics to some of the biggest motor manufacturers in the world from its plant in Millstreet, Co. Cork, runs Mainsaver version 10.2 alongside the complementary web-based modules Spidex WMM and Spidex BI.

“Before we introduced Mainsaver, our day-to-day maintenance activities were generating large quantities of paperwork and the objective was to remove as much of that as possible,” says Maintenance Supervisor Michal Ostrykiewicz. “Our two biggest sources of paper were preventative maintenance job sheets and purchase requisitions, so that’s where we started.”

During the course of a working week Alps’ maintenance department frequently printed off some 500 job sheets. The sheets were stapled to their associated documentation, divided up according to department and then issued to the engineers. A second round of administration began at the end of each shift, when the sheets were returned and had to be manually sorted into “completed” and “not completed”.

“Much of the information I needed was completely out of date by the time it reached me” recalls Mr Ostrykiewicz. “I would sometimes have to wait until Wednesday to find out how many jobs had been completed and added in the previous week. This was clearly unsatisfactory.”

Further delays could be incurred if spare parts needed to be ordered. Purchase requisitions and subsequent purchase orders were each generated manually on paper and their details keyed into Alps’s legacy system. This process was labour-intensive, time-consuming and had few benefits, as the system could not hold important data like overall inventory value or usage history of spares.

“Since we installed Mainsaver, we are fully in control of these processes. We are now able to plan our preventative maintenance jobs with the required spares and can rely on the accuracy of the on-hand quantities shown in the system. We have also saved a great deal of time and paper because we no longer have to double-enter purchase requisition data.”

The objective of reducing the amount of paperwork and administration would have been made substantially more difficult if the replacement CMMS was going to be difficult or time-consuming to operate. Ease-of-use was therefore one of the key factors in system selection and was pivotal to Mainsaver’s selection by Alps.

Michal Ostrykiewicz: “Spidex’s offerings were certainly the most attractive in terms of end-user clarity, particularly Mainsaver Shop Floor and Spidex BI. These modules are clearly designed around the principle that users shouldn’t need to navigate dozens of buttons to add or retrieve information. We selected Mainsaver on that basis and I think we can safely say that the decision has been vindicated.”
