To help manage rising levels of rail passenger traffic, the Major Projects team of Stannah Lift Services has been commissioned to install two 16-person, 6-stop, traction-drive passenger/goods lifts in each of the brand new multi-storey car parks serving Birmingham International, Rugby, Preston and Luton rail stations.

The installations at Birmingham International multi-storey car park were completed to
budget and schedule and have been in operation since the car park opened in September 2009. The extra 835 parking spaces ranged over six storeys have brought the total spaces available to 2,225. This project has been closely followed by Rugby and Preston, with Preston showcasing two hydraulic-drive models to cater for this car park’s particular headroom considerations. Luton is scheduled for completion in October 2010.

Serving one of the busiest airports in the UK, and the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham International station’s multi-storey car park now features two Stannah passenger lifts that will enable all members of the public, including those with compromised mobility, to access all its six-storeys, and the station, safely and easily.

These new installations, to Network Rail specifications, meet the requirements of the Lifts Directive (95/16/EC) 1995, and EN 81-1/2 safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts.

Stannah Network Rail Project Manager, Stuart Beard, comments: “This brand new car park will help cater for thousands of car-driving passengers and visitors to Birmingham International station every year. Serving the extra parking for up to 835 vehicles, the new passenger lifts are engineered to deliver first class service for about 25 years in such a heavy-duty environment.”

Manufactured to the highest specification, these 1200kg lifts are fitted with electronic 3D safety edges to all car doors, alarm push buttons, and two-way communication systems in the cars and at each landing. In-car speech synthesisers also provide lift travel information at each landing. Operating at a contract speed of .63 metres per second, they have single-entry lift cars on each landing with a clear access of 1100mm x 2100mm, and internal car dimensions of
1600mm deep x 1600mm wide x 2300mm high.

In addition to the general repair and maintenance of Network Rail lifts, Stannah is
involved in many lift refurbishment and renewal projects at stations across the UK. This work ensures each lift is suitable for independent use by all members of the public, including those with disabilities.
